Task 2: A reflection

Task two has been a great opportunity to developed my skills within both digital design and visual design. The first to parts of task two, the ransom note and monogram pushed me to focus on pre-existing design elements around me.

The ransom note helped me to center on text and font and how the two interact to create a readable piece of visual media communication. This exercise made me examine the use of text, font and styling in print media and the influence this can have on the visual impact and readability. From this portion of task two I leant how to make stylistic choices that are impactful and unique without compromising legibility. I was able to understand what factors impact legibility, like variations in font colour and sizing across a singular piece or text.

In this part of the task I was challenged to take a pre-existing  quote and re-image it to translate a new meaning in my own words.

Moving onto the monogram I was first challenged with finding a font that I believe represented me, my personality and my design aesthetic. Originally I leaned towards a more modern, playful Sans Serif font however as I started manipulating the letters I felt as though it didn’t truly represent me and I wanted a font with more personality so I turned towards Serif fonts.

I really enjoyed this part of task two as it felt very personal and I loved knowing I was creating something that I could use again and again to personalise my work.

The last stage of the task made me look at the bigger picture and apply what I had learnt as a whole. I took what I had learnt about font, text, styling and layout and applied it to a number of text layouts for my booklet. I was able to experiment with font size, alignment , drop caps, colour, and background styling.
